November 13, 2011Ecuador
Shrimp Production Up 25% in 2011

The National Aquaculture Chamber (CNA) thinks farmed shrimp production in 2011 will be 25 percent greater than production in 2010.  Yahira Piedrahita, executive director of CNN, said sales totaled $800 million in 2010 and will probably reach $950 million in 2011.  In 2011, Ecuador’s production of farmed shrimp benefitted from the disease and weather problems experienced by shrimp farmers in Vietnam, Mexico, India and Thailand.

• Ecuador has 175,000 hectares shrimp ponds that generate 200,000 direct and indirect jobs.

• The registration of Ecuadorian shrimp farms does not appear to be making much progress.

• The industry continues to emphasize quality over quantity
